Area
The historic town of Battle lies just 5 miles from Hastings and is the site of the famous 1066 Battle of Hastings. Battle Abbey was founded to commemorate the event and the town was gradually built around the Abbey. Later one of the most successful Gunpowder Works was based in Battle and supplied British ships through the Napoleonic wars. During your stay visit the Abbey and walk across the battlefield or spend time at nearby Yesterdays World museum.
Hastings, originally a fishing port is now a seaside resort and major shopping centre with several supermarkets though it is still possible to buy fresh fish directly from the fishermen near their ancient black fishing huts close to the Old Town where there are narrow lanes, ancient buildings, museums, antique shops and classic inns. On hot days visit the shingle beach and enjoy the fine sand at low tide or take a walk in Hastings Country Park. On wet days there is still plenty to do including Underwater World, Smugglers Adventure or the Shipwreck and Coastal Heritage Centre.
Whilst staying in The Old School it is easy to include visits to Bodiam, Dover & Pevensey Castles, historic Canterbury, the medieval Cinque Port town of Rye as well as the seaside resorts of Bexhill and Eastbourne whilst, if you fancy a trip to France, Dover is only about a 1 hours drive and the Eurotunnel entrance at Folkestone is even closer. The theatres and other attractions of London are also available by taking the trains as the journey lasts only about 1 hours.
Those who like gardens and forests will enjoy trips to Sissinghurst, Pashley Manor, Great Dixter, Sheffield Park Garden and Bedgebury Pinetum whilst a ride on a steam train on The Kent & East Sussex Railway between Bodiam and Tenterden provides the chance to see more of the local countryside. The area has several vineyards which welcome visitors as well as pretty villages with old inns for pub lunches. Those wanting more activity will find golf clubs at Battle and Sedlescombe, fishing at Darwell Reservoir, horse riding near Catsfield & water sports at Bewl Water or along the coast.
